One of the Greatest Point Guards of All-Time

assist: as⋅sist / [uh-sist] / –verb (used with object)

1. to give support or aid to

2. to be associated with as an assistant or helper.

Interesting.

I searched through the NCAA and NBA record books to see if there was any mention of Maxwell’s assist record. Arguably one of the greatest point guards of all-time: the man, the myth, the legend is [coming] back. This man is quite the talent, furnishing some of our generation’s most creative music.

Two things to note: 1) his album is coming out this summer, not sure when, but a MUST cop 2) he’s headlining Essence Fest this year in New Orleans.

This is just an fyi, cheers to one of the best out there. He’s up there in my Sade category.

Hype. Nervous. Anxious. Excited. Nerves bad. Ready.

Let’s go.

Where everybody knows your name: 7-11

In the notion of being raised in a “village”, a neighborhood “where everybody knows your name”, I wanted to acknowledge and pay tribute to the 7-11 that has been a part of me for my entire life. Located in Inglewood, at the corner of Centinela & Eucalyptus, this establishment has been the locale for many many many many stories (good and bad).

As a sidenote, upon moving to the neighborhood in the late 70’s, my parents were strongly interested in making the investment of purchasing this same store…went through the necessary steps/process and all, but opted out nonetheless.

But back to 7-11. Till this day, there a few gentlemen that frequent the store every single morning: older men, retired I assume, majority of whom were coaches up at the infamous Ladera Little League (Coach Harper if you want names). Every visit, there are words of wisdom exchanged, current events discussed, and good ole dialogue that you can’t find anywhere else, but a neighborhood store. The centerpiece is the coffee/tea station.  What normally takes all of 2mins to make a fresh cup of your favorite, tends to take roughly 10-15mins, depending on who’s in attendance.

However, the most important element is the assumed part-time employee, Mama: an elderly, retired, african-american woman, that keeps the establishment on point, gives hugs and a kiss on the cheek on-demand, and is always filled with a warm spirit and genuine smile.

Today (Jan 6th), she took her time to breakdown my stubborness and convinced me to try a cup of Green Tea (new addition to the drink station) instead of the regular cup of coffee. I was convinced not by a health tutorial, but more so the knowledge and wisdom she conveyed to me…she had me at “Boy, you need to…”.

So when time permits, if you’re ever in the area on a weekday morning, take a stop by my very own/favorite 7-11 establishment. Where I’m greeted as Trey (childhood nickname; I’m the 3rd, hence Kenneth Billups III), not Ken Billups.

Live. Love. Life.

Ken Billups Choice: Quizno’s Classic Cobb Salad

This is by far my favorite salad…for now. Keeping in my mind I’m trying my best to favor the healthy (salad) option. The attraction: fresh ingredients and tasty flatbread (I know, not healthy), and it’s certainly enough salad to satisfy a meal.

If you haven’t tried it, go get one like asap. Tomorrow. Like foreal.

Introducing Finesse Films

Not too many folks know, but I have a total aspiration and love for short films and documentaries.

Just a few things that capture what I like:

true stories (not mandatory); CINEMATOGRAPHY; High Definition (love it); strong concept / good plot; widescreen; community issue / global crisis; strong plot; good acting/casting; ”raw feel”

This is all I can think of right now, and I’m not even sure if this “combination” makes sense, I just know a good film when I see it. So, the moral of the story point being, I will post frequent short films, bios, documentaries, etc through the lens of “Finesse Films” (just came up with that name, might change it LOL). I think ultimately (read: once I’m settled, have play money, and the necessary resources) I’ll dibble and dabble into short films someway somehow.

sidenote: if there are any aspiring film folks out there that have the same interest, yet have the resources, holla @ cherboy.

In the meantime, enjoy the short film below: hilarious.

Ken Billups Choice: Stella Artois

It was October 2007, on a 10-day trade mission trip to China as an associate of the Long Beach Chamber of Commerce. Joined by my esteemed colleague Olu Davis, he put me onto the adult beverage that is now my beer of choice:

Stella Artois.

Brewed by InBev, and Latin for star, I still can’t quite put my finger on why this particular lager has become my favorite, but trust me, it is.

Upon introduction, in our travels throughout China, Stella seemed the be the most available and common beer; for some reason that intrigued me. Upon returning to home to the States, I have come to realize that it is certainly a popular beer here as well. And now, it has become a lot more available and visible due InBev’s recent acquisition of Anheuser-Busch.

Enjoy the beverage as I have…I look forward to a toast to a nice good cold Stella.

Cheers!
