The Benefactor of the Inaugural Ball: The People’s Inaugural Project

Va. Man Spends $1 Million on Inaugural Package for Disadvantaged

By Michael E. Ruane (Washington Post Staff Writer)

It was billed as the biggest, most eye-popping of the inauguration hotel packages: the JW Marriott’s $1 million “build-your-own-ball” offer. You get 300 rooms, four suites, $200,000 worth of food and drink, and a primo site overlooking the Pennsylvania Avenue parade route.

And it was snapped up within hours of Barack Obama’s election as president by a customer the hotel declined to identify.

This morning, the Marriott is scheduled to announce that the buyer is a Virginia businessman who wants to bring to the inauguration disadvantaged people, terminally ill patients, wounded soldiers and others down on their luck.

Earl W. Stafford, 60, of Fairfax County, the founder of a Centreville technology company who grew up as one of 12 children of a Baptist minister, said he will provide his guests lodging, food and special access, as well as beauticians, gowns and tuxedos, if necessary.

Stafford has paid the $1 million, a spokesman said, and is prepared to spend $600,000 more for a breakfast, a luncheon and two balls at the hotel. Stafford said he hopes to recoup some of the $600,000 from other sponsors, yet to be recruited.

From the desk of the creative(s) behind Obama’s brand

Of course it would be none other than Jaime Macias (sidenote: jmacias is one of the most creative ppl I know; and I know tons of creative folks, trust me) who would introduce me to this wonderful installment highlighting the thought process and brand development behind one of the most impressive brands developed in decades.

Below, I urge you to enjoy the thoughts, ideas, and considerations from the desk of Sol Sender, Strategist at VSA Partners.

I watched it like 5 times each, but I’m just weird like that.

Obama nominates Chicago schools chief for Education post

Arne Duncan has a reputation for boosting test scores and closing weak schools. His policies — and basketball skills — are seen as a match for Obama’s.

By Michael Muskal (LA Times)

President-elect Barack Obama today formally announced Chicago schools superintendent Arne Duncan as his choice for Education secretary.

Duncan has built a reputation over seven years for improving test scores in the nation’s third-largest school district. He has also closed failing schools and replaced ineffective teachers.

“If we want to out-compete the world tomorrow then we’re going to have to out-educate the world today,” Obama told reporters in a televised news conference this morning at the Dodge Renaissance Academy, which was once closed as a failing school.

Duncan reopened the school as an academy where candidates for advanced degrees in education could gain practical experience in classrooms. Obama and Duncan, who often play basketball together, visited the school three years ago and hailed it as a successful model for teacher residency programs.

Inauguration Is a Culmination for Tuskegee Airmen

By KATHARINE Q. SEELYE (NY Times)

When the Tuskegee Airmen, the all-black force of elite pilots, emerged from combat in World War II, they faced as much discrimination as they had before the war. It was not until six decades later that their valor was recognized and they received the Congressional Gold Medal, the highest civilian honor Congress can give.

Now, the roughly 330 pilots and members of the ground crew who are left from about 16,000 who served are receiving another honor that has surpassed their dreams: They are being invited to watch the inauguration of Barack Obama as the country’s first black president.

FASHION - What Should Michelle Obama Wear?

by j.a.c.

Michelle Obama, our next first lady, is currently facing one of the most difficult choices of her life. No, it doesn’t have to do with foreign policy or how to be the most amazing wife, mother, and politician she can be or what school to send Malia and Sasha to (although I believe that last one has already been decided). The ginormous question looming over her beautiful head of “Motions” permed, shoulder length, black hair is “What am I going to wear to the Inauguration?!”  Well if you had top designers from around the world throwing all kinds of fantabulous, haute couture sketches your way, you’d have a problem too. I know I would!!!!!!

Michael Kors and Diane Von Furstenburg and Monique Lhuillier Oh MY!

Choices, choices, choices.  (Oh what I wouldn’t give to be in her position right now!)

Since it’s going to be freezing, I personally think she should go for a bomb winter coat ensemble. My vote is for sketch number 33 shown here. That coat is FIERCE! Christian Lacroix worked it out! Do you hear me?! WORKED IT OUT!

Check out all her options here!

Which one is your favorite? What do you think your next first lady should wear on this upcoming historic day?
