Los Angeles Urban League Young Professionals (LAULYP) relaunched: kickoff meeting Tues Jan 27th
The Los Angeles Urban League Young Professionals (LAULYP) are “back”, relaunched. Tuesday January 27th (flyer shown below), LAULYP invites all local young professionals out to a kickoff meeting to introduce the new gameplan and administration: a NEW year, a NEW President, a NEW LAULYP!
After graduating from Florida Agricultural & Mechanical University (FAMU) and returning to Los Angeles, as a native of the city, I was compelled to dig in, serve the community, and make a name for Ken Billups. With that said, I joined LAULYP to connect with other young professionals aiming to not only seek out opportunity for self, but also serve the community. Over the years, I have partnered and maintained a relationship with LAULYP: the George Thompson administration, Justin Sanders administration, Felton Newell administration, and now the newly appointed President, [CLIMB Board of Director] Taj Tashombe.

This is certainly good news for the city of Los Angeles and I encourage any/all young professionals to get involved in their local community. As a necessary piece in the urban community, we applaud the efforts of resurgence and action. Let’s continue to support Taj Tashombe and the LAULYPs by getting involved and spreading the word. I’ll see you at the meeting…

Stats reveal 40-year low in L.A. crime rate

By ALICE WALTON, City News Service
LOS ANGELES — Crime in the city of Los Angeles continued to hit 40-year lows in 2008, a trend which Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and law enforcement officials credited to more police officers and interagency relationships.
There were 381 murders in 2008, 15 fewer than the previous year, and the lowest number since 1969 when there were 377 homicides. New York and Chicago, in contrast, saw their murder rates increase in 2008.
“From the valley to Boyle Heights, from West L.A. to South L.A., violence subsided in our neighborhoods,” Villaraigosa said. “Gang crime continues to decline thanks to the remarkable work and the bravery of the men and women of the LAPD.”

Schwarzenegger proposes 5 fewer school days (CA)

Faced with a massive budget deficit, the governor wants to stop state funding for a week of classes. Educators criticize the plan as most harmful to poor students.
By Seema Mehta (LA Times)
A proposal by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger to shorten the school year by five days is creating panic among educators across California, who say they barely have enough time to fit the state’s academic standards into the existing 180-day calendar.
The idea to cut funding equivalent to five school days would save $1.1 billion at a time when California faces a massive budget deficit. But state Supt. of Public Instruction Jack O’Connell called the proposal “devastating.”
U.S. unemployment hits 16-year high: 7.2%

The Labor Department says 524,000 jobs were lost in December, bringing the total for 2008 to 2.6 million. ‘The jobs market is still in a free-fall,’ one economist says.
By Maura Reynolds (LA Times)
Reporting from Washington — The nation’s unemployment rate soared to its highest level in 16 years last month, reaching an eye-popping 7.2% as businesses slashed their payrolls by 524,000 jobs in December, the government reported today.
All together, 2.6 million jobs were lost in 2008 — 75% of them in the last four months — and 11.1 million workers are now unemployed, the Labor Department said. And that’s not counting millions more who have reluctantly taken part-time work instead of full-time jobs or have become so discouraged they stopped looking for a new job.

Gears of War (Commercial)
Although, I have retired from playing video games, I couldn’t help but to be impressed by the production and marketing of the Gears of War commercial. Just as impressive is the music they added to the commercial in which the melody/tempo of the song is such a contrast to the imagery shown. Enjoy.
